UFC 286 results: Justin Gaethje bloody Rafael Fizeev, beats majority decision
London – Justin Gaethje Late crowded on the edge of the exit Rafael Physiev.
Gaethje (24-4 MMA, 7-4 UFC) snapped Fiziev’s (12-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) win streak by earning a majority decision win on Saturday. The lightweight bout was the co-main event of UFC 286 at The O2 in London.
Gaethje was awarded rounds 2 and 3 by one judge, and the second referee gave him rounds 1 and 3. The third referee gave Fiziev rounds 1 and 2, but gave Gaethje a 10-8 in round 3, causing a tie on his scorecard.
To start the first round, Viziev released a body kick, but Gaethje’s go-kick triggered a big reaction from Vizieff. Vizieff pressed on and continued attacking the body. The two men threw heavy lashes and I fell. Gaethje fired for a takedown, but Fiziev was wise to it. To close out the round, Fiziev landed an uppercut.
Vizieff landed two big shots to the body to start the second round. Gaethje’s accidental eye poke caused a temporary pause in the action. Gaethje surged higher with a partially blocked header. Gaethje then charged low with another powerful leg kick, followed by a combo of powerful punches. Vizieff’s body strikes began to pile up, as he threw more at a higher rate.
In the final round, Vizieff landed a big right hand, followed by a well-connected left hook, but Ghaithi ate it up. Gaethje landed a left hook and fired it up for a takedown that Vizieff stuffed. Jithji then slammed two hard blows like a mouse formed under Physiev’s eye. Gaethje’s output increased significantly, but Vizieff countered it with a short left sprint. Gaethje began to deal some serious damage to the bloodied Vizieff, resulting in a huge landing followed by ending the fight.
Gaethje is back in the winning column after being introduced by Charles Oliveira in a lightweight fight last May at UFC 274. Meanwhile, Fiziev saw his six-win streak.
