UFC 286 results: Gunnar Nelson dominates the mat, tapping Bryan Barberena with an armbar late in round 1

After a year as an octagon, UFC welterweight Gunnar Nelson He came back to remind everyone of his elite grappling skills.

On the main card of UFC 286, Nelson (19-5-1 MMA, 10-5 UFC) stepped into the cage at The O2 in London to take on Bryan Barberena (18-10 MMA, 9-8 UFC). It was a near-flawless performance for Nelson, who sealed the win at 4:51 of the first round via a sweet bar.

Nelson’s wide karate stance caused Barberina to be a little reluctant to get involved early in the fight, but he did land a few powerful leg kicks. When Nelson saw his opening to close the distance, he entered the clinch and took the fight on the floor.

From there, it was a clinic on the carpet.

Nelson threatened with a number of orders including a straight arm, Americana, kimura, and arm triangle choke – all while slowly transitioning to the full rack.

After sneaking in a few short elbows in a dominant position, Nelson committed to an armbar as time was running out in the round. The transmission closed and it didn’t take long for Barberena to click.

Nelson entered the Saturday competition a year after his unanimous decision victory over Takashi Sato. Eight of Nelson’s ten wins in the UFC have come by submission.

Barberina drops his second straight through submission. In his previous December outing, he delivered former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos Barberena with a rear choke. That loss snapped BamBam’s three-game winning streak.
