The FDA is recalling frozen organic strawberries sold at Trader Joe’s and Costco

Frozen organic strawberries sold at several popular grocery stores — including Trader Joe’s and Costco — were recalled by the Food and Drug Administration on Friday after the fruits were linked to several cases of hepatitis A.

The FDA said: “Based on epidemiological data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 5/5 (100%) of people who provided information about what they ate before they became ill reported eating frozen organic strawberries.

All affected strawberry varieties were imported from farms in Baja California, Mexico.

The hepatitis A virus strain at the root of the disease is genetically identical to A strain causing an outbreak in 2022which has also been linked to fresh organic strawberries imported from the same Mexican region, per the FDA.

Strawberries from the failed batch have been teased across the country and stocked the shelves of Aldi, Costco, Trader Joe’s, KeHE, Vital Choice Seafood, and PCC Community Markets.

“Consumers, restaurants, and retailers must not sell, serve, or eat recalled frozen strawberries. These recalled products must be returned or thrown away,” the FDA said.

California Splendor has recalled some packages of frozen strawberries from Costco stores across California.

The Scenic Fruit Company of Gresham, Oregon, has issued a voluntary recall request Citing “potential health risks”.

Symptoms of hepatitis A usually appear 15 to 50 days after eating contaminated products.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, “viral infections include fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, jaundice, dark urine, and pale stools.” “In some cases, especially in children under the age of six, hepatitis A infection may be asymptomatic.”
