Saudi Arabia Grand Prix: Max Verstappen ‘not happy’ finishes second as Sergio Perez wins in Jeddah

A frustrated Max Verstappen says he is “not happy” with his second-place finish as he and Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez have been given permission to race each other at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Pérez won from pole in Jeddah with Verstappen another point behind after jumping through the field after starting 15th due to a driveshaft failure in qualifying.

World Champion Verstappen, who helped propel him to victory by posting a safety car, said: “I recovered to second place which is good and in general the team is happy.

“But personally I’m not happy. I’m not here to be second, especially when you work so hard at the factory to come here in good shape and make sure everything is OK.

“When you’re fighting for a championship and it seems like it’s just between two cars [Verstappen and Perez] You have to make both cars reliable. We have to do better, for sure – a cleaner weekend would be great.

“We are allowed to race so the best man will finish on top.”

Rosberg: Verstappen mentality ‘not good for vision’

Said Nico Rosberg, world champion with Mercedes in 2016 Sky Sports F1 believes Verstappen could have been “more ‘generous'”.

“It’s not good to see,” said Rosberg. “We were also told that he skipped the team meeting [on Saturday] Apparently.

“I don’t think it’s a good way or a good mindset early in the season when the team has done a great job and worked so hard. I think he could be more generous.”

Perez declared that he was “ready to fight” for the world championship after his win in Saudi Arabia, saying “that’s the only reason I came here”.

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner hailed the Mexican success as the best in the sport.

Sergio Perez is optimistic he can rise to his challenge for the title after winning in Jeddah

Horner said: “I think that was Chico’s greatest race, his best race ever, managing the pace, restarting. We have a great car and two great drivers.

We spoke at the briefing [before the race] Saying, “You’re free to race, but you keep it clean.” Both are competitive. We saw two drivers pushing each other.”
