One dead and one wounded in a shooting during spring break in Miami Beach
A shooting broke out in a crowded area of Miami Beach on spring break, killing one person, wounding another and sending dozens seeking safety, police said.
Two men were killed Friday night, and one person arrested at the scene, the Miami Beach Police Department, was arrested chirp. It was not clear if the detained person was the shooter. Police also said that three rifles were recovered.
The shooting took place on Ocean Drive in South Beach, which is closed to vehicular traffic along its busiest stretch where hundreds of people gather to celebrate spring break. The police said that one of the victims died in hospital, while the second person was listed in critical condition. Their identities were not immediately revealed.
Authorities said dozens of people ran to evade the bullets. Several blocks in the area were cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape.
No other information was immediately available.
The shooting is the second in as many years during spring break on South Beach. Last year, the city imposed a midnight curfew after a shooting on Ocean Drive, too.
In the year before that, there were about 1,000 arrests and dozens of firearm seizures during a tumultuous spring break that prompted Miami Beach officials to take steps aimed at de-escalating the situation.
