Lewis Hamilton announces shock split: ‘I’m a better person because of it’
Lewis Hamilton He announces that his time with performance coach Angela Cullen is over.
The seven-time world champion has worked with physiotherapist Colin for the past seven years, with the New Zealander in Mercedes star side around the world as an integral part of his support team.
Colin, 48, joined Team Hamilton in 2016 and has worked with him through four of his seven world championships.
However, doubts were raised on Friday morning when Hamilton did not make it to the track Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with Colin by his side, before the 38-year-old confirmed the news on Instagram.
In an emotional post, he said: “For the past seven years, Angela Cullen has been by my side, pushing me to be the best version of myself. I am a stronger athlete and because of her I am better.”
“So I hope you’ll join me today in wishing her well as she takes her next steps to achieve her dreams. Thank you for everything Aang, I can’t wait to see what the future holds for you.”
Colin used to play hockey at international level for New Zealand between the ages of 15 and 21, before obtaining a degree in Health Sciences and Physiotherapy from Auckland University of Technology.
She worked at the English Institute of Sport in London as a physiotherapist, and worked with British Olympic runners, before working at the New Zealand Academy of Sport.
Colin herself posted a touching slideshow of the images to her social media, along with the caption: “Exactly 7 years ago today I was standing on the F1 circuit for the first time at the Australian Grand Prix. Today I’m excited to be on my next adventure.
“I am so grateful and blessed to have had such an amazing journey in Formula One and I know my story will continue. Thank you to the MB Team, who have been my family for the last 7 years.
And Lewis Hamilton you goat!! It has been an honor and a pleasure to stand by you, and I am so proud of you and all that you have achieved. Thank you for supporting me, believing in me and showing us the limitless potential we all have within us.
“I’m so excited to watch the next chapter for you. There’s nothing you can’t do. Don’t lose faith. Life’s journey is one big wave. Keep riding. Aspire for more. If dreams come true. With you forever. We still rise.”
It’s unclear at this point what Colin’s next role will be, while Hamilton will need to refocus without his long-term close friend in the future. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Grand Prize End of this week.
