Former students of Moral Wake Fieldstone are suing the New York school over racism

Serene Wright, a former Riverdale posh student who graduated in 2020, alleged in a lawsuit that her white classmates called her an “angry” black girl and “a scholarship girl who couldn’t afford the tuition.”
Another alumnus, Madison Mason, who graduated in 2021, alleged in a separate lawsuit that a student shouted the N-word in a math class.
Both lawsuits, filed recently in Manhattan federal court, cite additional cases of alleged racist behaviour by students who were not punished.
These “senior prank” terms included Watermelon remained in a black administrative office in 2016, as well as a 2020 video in which three white students described a black student as the N-word.
The lawsuits also allege rampant racial discrimination by school staff, including an incident in which a white algebra teacher admonished Wright in front of the class for being only minutes late, even though white students were regularly late with impunity.
The teacher then followed and continued yelling at Wright as she left the school’s Director of Student Health’s classroom.
The students and their mothers are suing the school, former principals, and staff for unspecified damages.
Nathaniel Smith, an attorney who represents the students and their parents, declined to comment or make available to meet his clients.
A Fieldstone spokesperson said many of the allegations detailed in the lawsuits have already been addressed by the school.
“We take all allegations very seriously and thoroughly investigate any cases of alleged discrimination or bias,” the spokesperson said.
“ECFS is founded on and deeply committed to our values and goals of diversity, equality, and inclusion, and we work hard to foster an environment where all members of our community feel welcome and each of our students can thrive.”
