China condemns British lawmakers for ignoring demand not to visit Taiwan – The Times of India



On Sunday, the Chinese embassy in Britain condemned a visit by British lawmakers this week to Taiwansaying they insist on visiting the island despite China’s staunch opposition.
Taiwan’s presidential office said that the group of six deputies from the Taiwanese-British all-party parliamentary group will meet with the president. Tsai Ing-wen in Taipei on monday.
China views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, and has stepped up military, political, and economic pressure to assert these claims.
Statement from the Chinese Embassy in London He said the deputies “insisted on visiting China’s Taiwan region despite China’s firm opposition.”
The embassy said this was a “flagrant interference in China’s internal affairs and a grave wrong signal to Taiwan independence separatist forces.”
“We want to tell relevant British politicians that any action that harms China’s interests will certainly be confronted by China,” she added, without going into details.
Taiwan regularly hosts visiting foreign lawmakers, which China routinely condemns.
The Taiwan government rejects China’s claims of sovereignty, saying that only the people of Taiwan can decide their own future.
