Astros player Jose Altuve injured from the field during the World Baseball Classic: ‘It wasn’t good’


Houston Astros Superstar Jose Altuve left Saturday night’s World Baseball Classic after taking the pitch in hand and the team feared he might break his thumb.

Altove, who was playing for Venezuela, suffered an injury 9-7 loss to the United States. Daniel Bard threw a pitch that hit Altove in the fifth inning. The diver has been recorded at 95.9 mph.

“The Astros will provide an update tomorrow, following further evaluation,” the club said in a statement.

A Houston athletic trainer told the Associated Press that there are concerns that Altuve may have broken his right thumb. “Everything is fine,” Altuve told reporters in Spanish after the game.

“It didn’t look good,” said Venezuela coach Omar Lopez. “It took 10 seconds for Tomas Vera, my coach, to get him out of the game. I said, ‘Oh, my God.’ We’ll see what happens. I started praying right away for Jose, for the whole team. That was our momentum here when he took the lead. And at one point Ma, all the stash died, like a lull, and we kind of got everyone to get up and move on.”

Lopez is the Astros’ first base coach.

Altuve’s teammate Ryan Pressley, a pitcher for the U.S. National Team, said he’s worried about the second star.

“I’m so worried about Jose,” said Presley. “He’s a big part of our lineup in Houston. On top of that, he’s an incredible teammate.”
