Arkansas upset defending champion Kansas to earn the Sweet Sixteen bid
Kansas’ national title defense came to an end in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday when Ricky Council4 of Arkansas made five free throws in the closing seconds and the eighth-ranked Razorback beat the number one. 1 Jayhawks 72-71 seed.
Davonte Davis scored 25 points and Council added 21 to lead Arkansas from a 12-point deficit in the second half. Kansas, playing without their ailing coach Bill Self, became the second No. 1 seed not to escape a tournament first weekend after Purdue lost Friday night to No. 16 seeds Fairleigh Dickinson.
Arkansas and head coach Eric Musselman return to the Sweet 16 for the third year in a row. The Razorbacks will play either St. Mary’s or Yukon in the Western Region semifinals in Las Vegas on Thursday.
Musselman and his players rushed to a second of fans seated in the stadium after the final buzzer. Musselman tore off his polo shirt, waved it over his head and shrieked with joy.
