CHICAGO (AP) — A 19-year-old man has been arrested for the death of a 7-year-old who was hit by a stray bullet while washing his hands in the bathroom of his family’s West Chicago home.
Police said Joseph Serrano of Chicago was charged Thursday with first-degree murder.
Looks like Achim Briscoe was getting ready for bed in October. 26 Matthew Someone fired several shots in a nearby alley and a bullet hit the child in the stomach, according to the police.
He later died in hospital.
Shell casings were found in the alley and investigators examined private video footage from the area in hopes of determining who fired the shots.
Police said investigators later learned that shots had been fired from one group of people at another group in a car in the alley.
“They shot at that group; the bullet clearly missed that group,” Chicago police said Detective Chief Brendan Deenihan He said. “No one in that group was hurt, and the bullet went through the window and hit the 7-year-old.”
Also Tuesday, a 16-year-old boy was charged with first-degree murder. The Cook County State Attorney’s Office said a third suspect was arrested, but not yet charged.
